My Story

Leonard is a cheerful and friendly Lab–Dachshund mix with a playful personality and an impressive athletic streak. This happy guy brings a lot of fun and energy wherever he goes, and he’s always ready for his next adventure—whether that’s a car ride, playtime with a dog friend, or tossing around one of his favorite squeaky toys. At home, Leonard is well-mannered and comfortable with a routine. He is fully potty trained and crate trained, and he sleeps quietly in his crate at night. He also rides very well in the car, happily relaxing in his crate even during longer trips. Leonard could easily sleep outside of the crate as well, but he’s perfectly content in his cozy space. Leonard is a playful and confident dog who enjoys the company of other dogs. Despite his smaller size, he can hold his own during playtime—even with much larger dogs—and currently enjoys romping around with a 75-pound canine companion. He has also done well during visits to a small dog park, greeting other dogs in a friendly and social way. While he would likely enjoy having another dog in the home, he doesn’t necessarily require one. With a moderate energy level, Leonard enjoys a mix of activity and relaxation. He doesn’t require a fenced yard and has done just fine without one, but he certainly loves opportunities to stretch his legs and play. Trips to the dog park, rides in the car, and games inside the house keep him happy and engaged. His athleticism and enthusiasm suggest he could even excel in activities like agility with the right training. Leonard loves toys—especially soft squeaky ones—and enjoys chewing on durable bones and frozen Kongs. When it comes to food, he’s extremely enthusiastic and gets very excited at mealtime. While he knows commands like “sit,” “outside,” and “wait,” his excitement for food sometimes makes patience a challenge. The good news is that he shows no signs of food aggression—he’s simply very eager for his meals. He walks well on a leash but can pull when excited, so continued leash training or an obedience class would help him polish those skills. Leonard can also be a bit vocal at times, so a home without shared walls may be the best fit. Affectionate, playful, and full of personality, Leonard is a wonderful companion who thrives on interaction and activity. With a loving home that will continue his training and enjoy his playful spirit, Leonard is sure to bring lots of joy, laughter, and tail wags to his forever family. Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***
