My Story

Hello. I am a sweet, older guy that came to the shelter when my owner could no longer care for me. I did well for my intake process (exam, vaccines, etc.), and I want to find a home where I can love my people and be loved in return. Please consider adopting me! I'll make you smile. I'm a stylishly senior pet and therefore my adoption fee has been reduced. If you are 65 and older and interested in adopting me, ask staff about our Senior Squared deal! Go to this page for more information about available pets, adopting, visiting our facility, and contacting our adoption desk.NOTES FROM MY FOSTER:`Toby is a sweet heart! He loves to curl up with lots of blankets and pillows and will cuddle with you. He may have a scary bark but don't let that fool you because he is very friendly. We were told that he may be reactive toward other dogs, and while we have not gotten within close proximity, when we have seen them on walks he has been rather uninterested in them.``Toby is one of the nicest dogs I have ever met!! He is a cuddler and super well behaved, and very food motivated. He quickly settled down into our busy house and did not mind when others came over. He often just wanted to sit on a bed and sleep, and spent most of the day doing so. He was very calm but loved to play tug of war with a toy. Toby slept through the night every night and just wanted to be curled up next to you with a blanket. He is very smart, knew lots of tricks and was a very fast learner! He LOVES pup cups!! Toby was so sweet and always wanted to cuddle! He would plop down in front of you and ask for a belly rub multiple times a day! He would often sit down next to us and was interested in whatever you were doing (especially if it had to do with food). He loved to cuddle with you and just wanted to be wrapped up in a blanket!``He was so incredibly friendly and loved exploring everywhere.``Toby and I had a good visit. He is a friendly pup and he was excited to get some time away from the shelter. He loves exploring. His nose is going all the time and he's alert to what's happening around him. He was well behaved for our time together. We didn't have any interactions with strangers or other dogs while we were out, but he saw squirrels on our walk and, though he clearly noticed them, he didn't seem very interested in doing more than watching them for a few minutes. He walks pretty well on a leash, but would like to go farther away than the leash will allow. So more leash training would be helpful. By the time we finished about a two-mile walk, he was more settled and did not pull as much. He does seem to understand `sit` and `down` commands, but needs more training to hold the positions longer. He gives me the sense that after he bonded with you that he'd be ready to work on trying to please. He definitely responded to my `Good boys` and petting. We went to Carolina North and took a walk in the woods. We covered about two miles. Toby completed the walk with energy to spare. He jumped up into the back of my SUV and rode without incident. When we drove into the parking area, he clearly got excited and looked as if he had been there before and was anticipating getting out to go for a walk. He's bright and enthusiastic about what he gets to do and seemed to fully appreciate the time he got to have away from the shelter. The right person will be lucky to get this pup for a companion.``Toby is an amazing dog, very well behaved around humans, he really likes to cuddle and going on long walks. He can be energetic and mellow at times, adorable and great to have in the house. Toby has a special way of cheering people up and very chill, he likes to cuddle and follow people around. Super gentle.`
