My Story

Meet Bitner! Life hasn’t been easy for Bitner. In December, he was suddenly left outside by his previous family and forced to fend for himself in the winter cold. Thankfully, a kind neighbor noticed him and brought him to us so he could have a second chance at a safe and loving life. Understandably, this experience shook Bitner’s trust in people. Because of that, he can be a cautious and sensitive boy who needs a little time to feel safe again. But like a Sour Patch Kid, Bitner may be a little “sour” at first… and then he turns very sweet. Bitner tends to be watchful around new people and may need space while he decides if he trusts you. If someone moves too quickly or pushes his boundaries, he might give a little swat to say he needs space. However, when people are patient, gentle, and respectful, Bitner slowly lets his guard down and begins to show his softer side. Once he starts to trust you, it becomes clear that Bitner does crave affection and companionship. The fastest way to his heart is through treats and food, as he is very food motivated. With snacks, soft voices, and gentle pets on his terms, Bitner begins to realize that people can be kind again. Bitner is also FIV positive. FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) affects a cat’s immune system, but many FIV+ cats live long, happy, normal lives with routine veterinary care and a safe indoor home. The virus is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, so many FIV+ cats can live peacefully with other friendly cats. Because Bitner is a sensitive guy who gets overwhelmed easily, he is currently kept in a quieter area away from the main adoption floor. If you’d like to meet him, just ask a staff member or volunteer — they’ll be happy to introduce you! Bitner would do best in a calm, patient home with people who understand that trust takes time. The reward for that patience is watching a shy cat slowly blossom into a loving companion. This thoughtful boy has been through a lot, but with the right family, Bitner has the chance to learn that not all humans give up on you. DOB: 12/5/2023 All cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and tested for FIV/FeLV. **If interested in adopting me, please fill out an online adoption application at https://colonycats.org/adoption_app.html to expedite the process. Due to the large number of inquiries received, we are unable to respond to emails quickly.** Feline Immunodeficiency Virus positive cats can live normal lives both in quality and duration. They do take special care in terms of monitoring them for signs of infection.  FIV can be passed from cat to cat via deep bite wounds, but not from casual contact so positive cats can live with negative cats without the fear of spreading FIV as long as they get along and are spayed/neutered.
