About the Schnauzer
The Miniature Schnauzer is a small, robust German breed developed in the late 19th century by crossing small Standard Schnauzers with Affenpinschers and Poodles to create an efficient ratter for farms and homes . It is the most popular of the three Schnauzer breeds and the only AKC terrier breed not originating from the British Isles . Characterized by its square-proportioned body, dense wiry double coat in salt and pepper, black, or black and silver, and distinctive facial furnishings—a full beard, bushy mustache, and long eyebrows—this breed presents a uniquely expressive, almost human-like appearance . The wiry coat served a practical purpose, protecting the dog from rodent bites during its original work as a vermin hunter . Today, Miniature Schnauzers are valued for their spirited, friendly temperament, high intelligence (ranked 12th among all breeds in working intelligence), and adaptability to various living situations . They form strong bonds with their families, are excellent watchdogs with a tendency to bark, and excel in dog sports including agility, obedience, and Earthdog trials . Regular grooming is essential to maintain their distinctive wiry coat and prevent matting of their signature beard and furnishings.
