About the Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is an ancient breed originating in Tibet, where for over a thousand years they served as interior sentinels in monasteries and palaces, alerting monks to any intruders with their distinctive, sonorous bark. Considered sacred and associated with the Dalai Lama, these "bark lion sentinel dogs" were never sold but only given as gifts. The breed is characterized by its luxurious, heavy double coat that parts naturally along the spine and flows to the ground, requiring significant grooming commitment. Beneath the dramatic coat is a sturdy, well-balanced dog that is slightly longer than tall, with dark oval eyes, a black nose, pendant ears, and a heavily plumed tail carried curled over the back. Independent and confident, Lhasa Apsos form profound bonds with their families while remaining wary of strangers, true to their guardian heritage. They are intelligent but can be stubborn, responding best to patient, positive training methods. Adaptable to apartment living, these long-lived companions typically enjoy 12-15 years of life.
