About the Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world, named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua where it was first noted in the mid-19th century . Believed to be descended from the Techichi, a companion dog kept by the ancient Toltec civilization, this breed packs an incredible amount of personality into its tiny frame . Characterized by its distinctive apple-shaped head, large luminous eyes, and large erect ears, the Chihuahua comes in both smooth-coat (short-haired) and long-coat varieties, and virtually any color combination . These lively, alert dogs form deep bonds with their human companions and are known for their bold, confident demeanor despite their diminutive stature. While they thrive on human companionship and enjoy cuddling, they can be feisty with a persistent bark and are often wary of strangers . Chihuahuas are intelligent and can excel in dog sports like agility, though their small size requires careful handling, especially around young children who might inadvertently harm them . Due to their high metabolism and small body size, they are prone to hypoglycemia and require protection from cold weather and larger animals
